从上文可以看出，美国南北战争之前的南方，男女青年可以自由恋爱，当然是指自身自由的男女青年，其家庭背景多是庄园主家庭。一般情况下都是男青年追求女青年，也有女青年追求男青年的，但如果被发现女青年追求男青年，而男青年并不接受，会被认为是件不体面的事，连女青年所在的家庭也会因此感到不体面。

scarlett的父亲得知女儿是这种情况时，也是这么认为的，但他喜欢scarlett，女儿如果坚持，他会努力顺女儿的心的。

scarlett暗恋ashley，ashley是一个大庄园主的儿子，但scarlett的父亲不认为ashley有多好，不是ashley人品不好，而是ashley的一些模糊的特质让他觉得scarlett若嫁给ashley不会幸福。
